NEUVE CHAPELLE.

10th.

7.30 a.m. Battn. stood to arms. Weather fine but dull. Terrific bombardment opened on enemy lines by our artillery. Lt. WYNCOLL and 30 men attached R.E.

8 a.m. Receive news that German trenches for a front of 400 yds carried.

10.30 a.m. Battn. move to RED BARN.

11.15 a.m. Battn. move to ROUGE CROIX.

11.45 a.m. Battn. move to PONT LOGIS and then to support trenches about 600 yds N. of PONT LOGIS on the E. side of the RUE DE TILLELOY. Up to this time the 24th Brigade except for 2nd E. LANCS. REGT. had been in reserve.

5.30 p.m. Battn. moved to crossroads N of NEUVE CHAPELLE and deployed for attack points 85 and 86 N.E. of that village and advance to a position facing S.E. and about 1000 yds N.E. of NEUVE CHAPELLE being held up by a strongly fortified breastwork. Battn. entrenched so as to make good ground gained. During these operations, the Bn. was supported by 2nd E.LANCS. REGT. (Detailed statement attached).

NEUVE CHAPELLE.

11th. 10 a.m. C. Coy. advanced N.E. through the orchard on the left of our line and occupied some broken-down houses. Lt. WEIGALL killed in this advance. Weather fine but dull. Battn shelled throughout the day by the enemy.

4 p.m. D. Coy. charge enemy’s breastworks but suffering heavy loss from machine-gun fire is forced to abandon the enterprise. Capt. STACKHOUSE and 2/Lt. COXON Killed, 2/Lt. BURTON i/c Grenadiers and 2/Lt. WATERS wounded. Capt. HODGSON wounded early morning, Capt. WEBB at midday.

4.30 p.m. 2/Lt. WEBSTER in afternoon and Major MORTIMORE at 4.30 p.m. Command now devolves on Major MORLEY. 12 m.n.. Draft of 25 men join the Battn.

12th. 5 a.m. Germans suddenly shell Battn Hd.Qrs. and advance in overwhelming numbers to the attack. Our right is forced to retire through fear of being outflanked, and Battn. after inflicting heavy losses on the enemy, retire to the support trench about 150 yards in rear. Enemy continue to advance massing on our right and right centre, but thrown into disorder by company bomber Pte. RIVERS and through counter-attacks by our left and left centre retire being decimated by our fire, and Battn. regains its former trenches by charges, the enemy again suffering very heavily from our fire whilst retiring.

Weather fine but dull with a heavy mist in the early morning.

7 a.m. Battn, in complete possession of its former line. During this action Capt. DIXON, 2nd Lts. SHACKLOCK and WALKER were killed and Lt. and Adjt STRANGER and 2nd Lt. BINNEY were wounded.

3 p.m. Battn. suffer a few casualties from own artillery fire. Lieutenant O’DWYER wounded about this time.

9 p.m. Battn. withdrawn to support trench and a new defensive line is taken up.
