British 1914 Star, British War and Victory MedalBorn at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and lived at 93, Westgate, Mansfield. Son of William and Sarah Bird, of “Hillcrest”, King Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting 25th November 1899 at Derby. He served in South Africa from 1901 to 1902 and in Singapore and India. He went to France 4th November 1914 and was killed in action, 12th March 1915, aged 33, during the German counter-attack at Neuve Chapelle, France.
