Born at Allenton, Derbyshire. Son of John and Annetta Burton, of 82 Dale Street, Derby. He was a labourer prior to enlisting on 10th February 1910. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 4th April 1913 and went to France on 8th September 1914 with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He suffered gunshot wounds to his head on 20th October 1914 at La Basse, France, and was evacuated to England on Hospital Ship St. David on 25th October 1914. He returned to France in February 1915 and was killed in action, on 11th March 1915 aged 20, during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, France.
