Sunday 20th September 1914
2nd Battalion ordered to retake trenches taken by the
Germans at the head of the Troyon Valley, France, during the Battle of the Aisne.
2nd Battalion war diary entry for this date
TROYON.
20th. In reserve north of the village, there was an alarm and the enemy were seen to have taken the trenches on the right of the British line on the ridge at the head of the TROYON valley- the most vital point in the line of defence. The Battalion moved out to retake the trenches. A German column was seen to be marching off prisoners. A and C Companies who were in bivouac nearest the Trench moved out at once under Capt’s Popham and Parkinson, Major Leverson Gower joining them at the head of the valley. Their advance was met by a very heavy machine-gun fire from the front and left flank which caused many casualties the ground being devoid of any cover and very cramped. the advance was checked until the other two companies, which were close up reinforced the line and then a general advance was made with a great dash and in spite of heavy losses the trenches were retaken. The battalion then prepared to hold the trenches just as the men had entered them. It was impossible to sort the Companies or rearrange them as each man occupied a separate “dugout” and there was no through communication. For this reason, it was not possible to call a roll or to arrive at the exact number of casualties for the day. In officers, these amounted to 4 killed and 8 wounded. Other ranks about 180 of which some 40 were killed.
Names of officers are as follows-
KILLED.
Lieut. P.M. Murray, Lieut. Bernard., Lieut. B. Ash, Lieut. R. Milner.
WOUNDED.
Capt. C.C. Parkinson, Capt. R.S. Popham, Capt. G. Luther, Lieut. MacBean, 2nd Lieut. R.E.C. Weigall. 2nd Lieut. W. A. Crellin. 2nd Lieut. B. Allen.
This was a most important action as the safety of the British right and the bridge over the R. AISNE at BOURG depended on the maintenance of the trenches. All ranks behaved splendidly.
