Born and lived in Nottingham. Son of John Richards and Mary Ann Buckland, of 27 Mount Street, New Basford, Nottingham. He was a farm labourer prior to enlisting at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He went to France on 8th September 1914 and was killed in action on 20th September 1914, when the battalion was ordered to retake trenches taken by the Germans at the head of the Troyon Valley, France, during the Battle of the Aisne.
