Born at Hucknall, Nottinghamshire 12th July 1892. Son of James E. And Hannah S. Whyatt, of “Lyndhurst,” Church Drive, Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. Educated at Mundella School, Nottingham and Jesus College, Oxford. In October 1914, he was elected professor of English language and literature at Rangoon College, India but refused the appointment being instead gazetted Second Lieutenant Sherwood Foresters. He served with the BEF in France and Flanders from August 1915. He was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1916 and Captain in April 1917. He was twice mentioned in despatches by Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig, for gallant and distinguished service in the field and awarded the M.C. in the New Year’s Honours list 1918. London Gazette 1st January 1918 ” For conspicuous gallantry and ability as a company commander from February to September 1917. He has led his company in every action and proved himself a fine leader of men.” He was killed in action at Ypres on 18th October 1917, aged 25.
