Private Harry Cornelius Smedley

Born at Derby and lived at 3 Rose Cottage, Siddals Road, Derby. Son of Henry and Bertha Smedley. He was a railway painter and wagon builder prior to enlisting 2nd December 1915 at Derby. He went to France 6th August 1916 and was posted to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 11th September 1916. He suffered gunshot wounds to his face shoulder and right arm, 6th October 1916 and was transferred to England on Hospital Ship Panama, 6th November 1916. He returned to France, 5th March 1917, and was posted to the 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 28th March 1917. He was killed in action, 29th September 1917, aged 27, whilst serving in the line at Hill 70 near Mazingarbe, France.

His brother Private Harold Archer Smedley 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, also fell in the Great War.
