Born at Derby and lived at Osmaston, Derbyshire. Son of Henry and Bertha Smedley. Husband of Rose Smedley, of 40, Taylor Street, Osmaston, Derbyshire. He was a railway and carriage wagon builder prior to enlisting at Derby. He was killed in action, 27th April 1918, aged 31, when a German shell burst nine gas cylinders in ‘A’ Company trenches near Hulluch, France.
