Born at Tupton, Derbyshire and lived at Pilsley, Derbyshire. Son of John Stanley and Mary Ellen May, of Garth House, Pilsley, Chesterfield. He was a lace draughtsman prior to enlisting at Ilkeston. He was killed in action, on 16th June 1916, at age 27, whilst serving in the line near Givenchy, France.

Buried: Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-lAvoue, France. Plot 3, Row G, Grave 31.
