Born and lived at Brampton, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Son of John and Annie Knowles, of 208 Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield. Husband of Mary Ann Knowles, of Walton Fields Road, Chesterfield. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Chesterfield. He served in Gallipoli during 1915 with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was killed in action, on 31st July 1917 in the British attack at Bellewaarde Lake, near Ypres, Belgium.
