Born and lived at Middleton-by-Wirksworth, Derbyshire. Son of John and Georgina Goodall, of The Green, Middleton-by-Wirksworth, Derbyshire. He was a limestone quarry driver prior to enlisting at Derby. He went to France on 14th July 1915 and was killed in action, on 17th June 1916, by German gas shelling of the trenches near Neuve-Eglise, Belgium.
