Born at Devonport and lived at Ulverstone, Cumbria. Son of Henry and Elizabeth Cottrell, of West Villa, Oxford Road, Guiseley, Leeds. Husband of Ethel Cottrell. He was a golf club maker prior to enlisting at Derby. He was killed in action, 9th August 1915, in the attack at Ismail Oglu Tepe, (Chocolate Hill), Gallipoli, Turkey.
