Born at Nottingham and lived at Kimberley, Nottingham. Son of James and Elizabeth Chettle, of 47, Nottingham Road, Kimberley, Nottingham. He was a Railway Labourer prior to enlisting at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. He was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, aged 36, whilst serving in the line near Givenchy, France.

Buried : Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L’Avoue, France. Plot III, Row H, Grave 21.
