Born at Mayfield, Derbyshire and lived at Mapleton, Derbyshire. Son of Edward and Martha Carter, of Market Place, Ashbourne, Derbyshire. He was a stable boy prior to enlisting 13th November 1914 at Buxton, Derbyshire. He went to France on 19th August 1915 and was killed in action, 15th October 1915, age 19, whilst the Battalion was in the line at the Hohenzollern Redoubt, France.
