Born and lived at Derby. Son of James and Emma Basford, of 21, Liversage Street, Derby. He was a bookbinder prior to enlisting at Derby. He was killed in action, on 15th July 1916, aged 26, whilst the battalion was moving between Poulainville and Longeau, France.

His brother Private Albert Basford 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment also fell in the Great War.
