He was born at Bilsthorpe, Nottinghamshire. He lived at Rushden, Northamptonshire, Son of Joseph and Mary Jane Ward, of 205, Wellingborough Road Rushden. He was a clerk for the Midland Railway prior to enlisting at Rushden. He went to France 27th February 1917 and was killed in action, 7th April 1917, during the attack at Le Verguier, north-west of Saint Quentin, France.
