Born at Awsworth, Nottinghamshire. He lived at 41 Nottingham Road, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Husband of Lily Straw, of 25 Lower Granby Street, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. He enlisted at Derby 7th April 1915 and went to France 10th February 1917. He was promoted to Corporal 30th October 1917 and Sergeant 29th December 1917. On the 10th May 1918, he suffered gunshot wounds to his left foot and was admitted to No. 6 General Hospital at Etaples, France. He rejoined his battalion on 31st July 1918 and was awarded the Military Medal on 30th August 1918. London Gazette 21st January 1919 ” For gallantry and devotion to duty when in the attack on the King Street trench system near Le Hamel (Le Touret) on 20th August 1918″ and Bar to the medal 14th May 1919 ” For gallantry and devotion to duty during the attacks near St. Quentin on the 29th September 1918″. He was wounded in his right thigh on 3rd October 1918 and after being transferred from the 12th Casualty Clearing Station at Tincourt to No. 1 Australian General Hospital at Rouen, and died of wounds 24th October 1918.
