He was born at lived at Lawn Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. He was a miner at Silverhill Colliery, Sutton-in-Ashfield, and enlisted on 5th August 1914 at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He went to France on 8th September 1914 with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and was killed in action, on 11th March 1915 during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, France.
