Son of Henry and Annie Smith, of The Grove, Cropwell Butler, Nottinghamshire. He went to France on 11th September 1914 and was killed in action on 20th October 1914, aged 23, when the battalion held position south-east of Bois Grenier, Ennetieres/Escobecques, France against a German attack.
