Born in Merthyr Tydvil, Glamorgan. Son of John Henry Smith; Husband of Rebecca Smith, of 8, Newstead Colliery, Nottingham. Husband of Rebecca Smith of 8, Newstead Colliery, Nottingham. Was a miner. He enlisted on 10th May 1915 at Nottingham. He went to France on 6th March 1916 and was appointed Lance Corporal on 21st December 1917. He suffered a perforated right eardrum on 13th September 1916 and was treated at No.3 Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, France. On 26th September 1916, he contracted trench fever and was admitted to No.14 Stationary Hospital at Wimereux, France. and was transported on hospital ship H.S. Panama to England. On recovery, he returned to France on 29th March 1917 and was killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 33, whilst holding the line near Morchies, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact)
