Born and lived at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Son of Robert and Georgina Smedley of 3 Bristol Road, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Husband of Elsie Smedley of 2 Belper Street Ilkeston. He was a house painter prior to enlisting. He was killed in action, probably 21st October 1917, aged 28, whilst the battalion was ordered to attack the German positions south of Houthulst Forest, Belgium.

n.b the CWGC show date of death as between 29th September 1917 and 1st November 1917.
