Second Lieutenant William Miles Smalley

Born 18th January 1891. Son of William Arthur and Ann Smalley, of 546, Moore Road, Mapperley, Nottinghamshire. He was educated at Alfreton Road Elementary Council School before attending Stanley Road Secondary School, Forest Fields, Nottingham, (High Pavement School) and University College, Nottingham. where after four years apprenticeship with Alderman Cook obtained the position of Lecture Assistant in the Chemical Department. He entered the college O.T.C. at its inception and quickly obtained “A” and “B” certificates. He received his commission in February 1914 on the supplementary list Special Reserve. He went to France on 5th November 1914 and was killed in action, on 9th December 1914, aged 23, by a sniper, while carrying out and supervising work in the “Port Arthur” trench near Neuve Chapelle, France.
