Sergeant William Simpson

Battalion: 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born at Wolverhampton, West Midlands. Son of George and Eliza Simpson; Husband of Ellen Simpson, of 62, Compton Street, Holmwood Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 20th June 1899 at Sheffield, Yorkshire. He served in the South African War, China, Strait Settlements and Singapore. He was promoted Corporal, 3rd November 1906 and Sergeant 25th September 1914. He went to France on 20th March 1915. He was reported believed killed in action, 9th August 1915, aged 35, but a letter received by the family dated 17th November 1915 suggested he was a prisoner of war. The eventual cause and date of death are not known.
