He resided at 140 Barnby Gate, Newark, Nottinghamshire and was a labourer. He enlisted on 9th August 1915 at Newark and went to France on 4th March 1916. He was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, aged 35, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
