Born in Sutton-In-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. Son of John Henry and Elizabeth Ann Roper, of 23, Lime Street, Sutton-In-Ashfield. He was a miner at Bentink Colliery, near Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, and enlisted at Sutton-in-Ashfield, January 1915. He went to France 25th August 1915 and was a stretcher bearer. He was killed 23rd November 1917, age 23.
