Born and lived at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Son of John William and Eliza Coggan, of 16 Rosemary Street, Mansfield. He was a colliery rope lad prior to enlisting 15th May 1916 at Mansfield. He went to France 4th October 1918 with the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and posted to the 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 9th October 1918. He was killed in action, 17th October 1918, in teh attack at Remicourt, France.
