Private Arthur Patrick

Army Number: 20564
Battalion: 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.
Born in South Normanton, Son of Hannah and Frederick Patrick, of Market Place, South Normanton. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Sutton-in-Ashfield on 8th December 1914.
Captain Edward Ralph Oakden, officer commanding βDβ Company, wrote to inform his mother, Hannah Patrick, of his death.
βIt is with very great regret that I write to inform you that your son, Pte. A. Patrick of my Company, was killed in action yesterday in Belgium. As a soldier, he did his duty bravely and well. His loss will be keenly felt not only by the officers but also by his late comrades who held him in high esteem. We laid him to rest this morning [19th August 1915] in a little soldiers’ cemetery not a mile away from the enemy’s trenches amongst men of other famous regiments. While we are here his grave will be well cared for and when we are away other regiments will take care of it, for soldiers always think of those who have given their lives to their country.β

Died: 18th August 1915.
Buried/Commemorated: Spoilbank Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 1. Row B. Grave 5.
