Lance Corporal William Newton

Battalion: 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born and lived at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Son of John And Hannah Newton, of 398, Birdholme, Derby Road, Chesterfield. He was a coal miner (pony driver) prior to enlisting at Chesterfield. He went to France on 17th August 1915 and was killed in action, 16th September 1916, aged 25, in the attack on the German positions at Guillemont, France during the Battle of the Somme.
