Born and lived in Nottingham. Son of Michael and Louise Newton, of 63, Monsal Street, New Basford, Nottingham. Husband of Lizzie Whittaker (formerly Newton), of 12, Athol Terrace, Egypt Road, Basford, Nottingham. He was a cane trader prior to enlisting on 24th March 1916 at Derby. He went to France on 4th July 1916 and was killed in action, on 16th September 1916, aged 24, whilst in the line near Verquetin, France.
