Born at Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire and lived at 30 Warsop Road, Mansfield Woodhouse. Son of George and Eliza Ann Newton, of Mansfield-Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire. He was a coal miner at Shirebrook Colliery prior to enlisting 7th September 1914 at Mansfield. He went to France 2nd March 1915 and suffered gunshot wounds to his left forearm 28th June 1915. He was awarded the Medal of St. George, 4th Class (Russia). London Gazette 25th August 1915. He was admitted to 25th General Hospital Camiers, France suffering from gunshot wounds, 25th September 1915 and died of these wounds 29th September 1915, aged 22.
