Sergeant Walter Murfitt

Battalion : 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.
Born at Stretham, Cambridgeshire. Son of Joseph and Amelia Murfitt, of Pump Lane, Stretham, Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire. He was a labourer prior to enlisting 26th January 1910 at Derby into the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He served in India from 29th September 1911 to the 2nd September 1914. He was appointed Lance Corporal 9th October 1914 and went to France 4th November 1914. He was promoted Corporal 20th December 1914 and Sergeant 24th May 1915. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 11th August 1915 and was killed in action, 5th October 1915, aged 27, by German shellfire, prior to the German attack on the trenches at Oder Houses, near Ypres, Belgium.
