London Gazette 14th January 1916: For conspicuous devotion to duty at Sanctuary Wood, Ypres, on 25.9.1915. when with four men he went up to the fire trenches and threw bombs without waiting for orders. He has done good work both patrolling and bombing.

Killed in action, 14th February 1916, during heavy German shellfire and the explosion of a German mine, prior to the German attack of the front line trenches, near the canal to the southeast of Ypres, Belgium.
