Born in Cork, Ireland and lived in Nottingham. Son of Alfred William and Caroline Mortimer, of The Foresters, Orston Drive, Wollaton Park, Nottingham. Husband of Eliza Mortimer, of 1, Cantab Terrace, Archer Street, Nottingham. He was a professional soldier and enlisted at Derby. He went to France on 28th February 1915 and was awarded the D.C.M. London Gazette on 3rd June 1916: “For gallant and good work when throwing bombs at a critical period. He has shown great daring and resource”. He was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, aged 31, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
