Major William Allen McClelland

Battalion: 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born 8th August 1889 in Manchester. Son of William And Emily Mcclelland, of Manchester; Husband of Florence Mcclelland, of 28, Leonard Avenue, Sherwood, Nottingham. He attended University College, Nottingham, where he trained as a teacher and joined the O.T.C. He taught at Southwark Street, School, in Basford, Nottingham and on the outbreak of war, applied for a commission. He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant 19th September 1914 and was promoted to Lieutenant 4th October 194 with the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He moved to the 17th Battalion, then the 15th Battalion in March 1916. He took part in the Battle of the Somme and was invalided home on 5th August 1916, suffering from shellshock and wounds. He returned to his battalion on the Ypres Salient and took temporary command in January 1918. He died from multiple gunshot wounds on 18th January 1918, age 28
