Born and lived at Nether Loads, Holymoorside, Derbyshire. Son of Herbert and Ann May, of Nether Loads Road, Holymoorside, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He was a horseman prior to enlisting on 10th December 1915. He was posted to the 19th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 11th April 1916 and went to France 16th July 1916 and was posted to the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 18th July 1916. He was killed in action, on 1st November 1916, aged 19, whilst in the line near Arras, France.

Buried: Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France. Plot 1 Row H. Grave 26.
