Born and lived at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Son of Thomas and Ellen Ada Matthews, of 33, West Bar, Chesterfield. He was an errand boy prior to enlisting at Chesterfield. He was killed in action, 26th September 1917, during the attack near Otto Farm, east of Wieltje, Belgium, in the Battle of Polygon Wood, during the 3rd Battle of Ypres.
