Born at Blaenaven, Monmouthshire, Wales, and lived at Uttoxeter New Road, Derby. Son of Jabez and Martha Matthews, of “Longfair” 35, The Avenue, Yeovil. He was prudential insurance agent prior to enlisting 8th September 1914 at Derby. He went to France 1st March 1915 and was killed in action, 26th June 1915, aged 26, by a German shell whilst repairing dugouts at Sanctuary Wood, Belgium.
