Born at Ilkeston, Derbyshire and lived at Stanley Hotel, Sycamore Road, Nottingham. Son of Henry and Mary Matthews of 113, Willoughby Street, Lenton, Nottingham. Husband of Lena Matthews of 70, Ebenezer Street, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting 17th August 1914 at Nottingham. He went to France 18th March 1915 and was admitted to 34, Casualty Clearing Station at Sanvic, France, 21st November 1915 suffering from appendicitis. He was taken to No.4 British Red Cross Hospital , Boulogne, France, 25th November 1915 and transferred to England, on Hospital Ship Jan Breydel, 15th December 1915. He returned to France 14th June 1916 and was killed in action, 12th August 1916, aged 21, whilst in the line near near Longueval, France during the Battle of the Somme.
