Born at Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. Son of Arthur and Mary Marvill, of House 1, Court 5, Kensington Street, Derby. He was a professional soldier and enlisted at Derby. He went to France 4th November 1914 and was killed in action, 7th August 1916, during the attack on Delville Wood, France, during the Battle of the Somme.

His brother Private John Marvill, 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, also fell in the Great War.
