Born at Colwick, Nottingham and lived at Carlton, Nottingham. Son of Frederick Herbert and Bertha Martin, of “Penlee”, Orlando Drive, Carlton, Nottingham. He enlisted at Nottingham and was commissioned Second Lieutenant 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 29th December 1915. He went to France 8th April 1917 and was killed in action, 30th June 1917, aged 19, whilst in the line near Cite St. Pierre, France.
