Born and lived at Carlton-in-Lindrick, Nottinghamshire. Son of Fred and Jane Marsden, of Blue Bell Yard, Carlton-in-Lindrick. He was a coal miner at Shireoaks colliery prior to enlisting at Worksop, Nottinghamshire. He went to Gallipoli with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 1st July 1915. He was wounded in Gallipoli and went to France on recovery and was posted to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was killed in action, on 27th July 1916, by German shellfire, whilst serving in the line near St. Jean, Belgium.
