Born and lived at Newark, Nottinghamshire. Son of William and Mary Elizabeth Markwell, of 24, Albion Street, Newark. He was and engineering turner prior to enlisting 11th March 1912 at Newark. He was appointed Lance Corporal 1st April 1913, went to France 2nd March 1915, and was killed in action, 30th April 1915, aged 20, whilst serving in the line at Kemmel, Belgium.
