Sergeant John Littlewood

Born at Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire. Lived at 36, Westwood Road, Colwick, Nottingham. Son of Thomas and Julia Littlewood, of 20, Martin’s Yard. Leenside, Nottingham. He was a bottler prior to enlisting 10th January 1901 at Derby. He served in Malta from 5th July 1901 to the 23rd April 1903, in India, Strait Settlements and South Africa. He went to France 7th October 1914 and was appointed Lance Corporal, 14th July 1915. He suffered shrapnel wounds to his left thigh and was admitted to No. 22 General Hospital, Etaples, France, 15th August 1915. He rejoined his battalion 19th January 1916, was promoted to Sergeant, 6th May 1916, and was killed in action, 9th October 1916, whilst in the line near Lesboeufs, France, during the Battle of the Somme.
