Son of Colonel H. A. Lewes and Mrs L. J. P. Lewes, of Rothsay, Camelsdale, Haslemere, Surrey. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant 5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 1st May 1911, promoted Lieutenant 7th May 1914, and adjutant 3rd April 1915 and promoted Captain 1916. He was wounded and taken prisoner on 1st July 1916, aged 29, during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and died of wounds the same day,
