Born at Hickleton, Yorkshire and lived at Creswell, Derbyshire. Son of John Thomas and Sarah Ann Leverton, of 39 Church Street, Creswell. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 22nd October 1914. He went to France on 5th March 1916 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
