Born and lived at Nottingham. Husband of Alice Maud Knowles, of 12, Alison Rise, Alfred Street Central, Nottingham. He was a foundry labourer prior to enlisting 13th August 1914 at Nottingham. He was promoted Sergeant 8th December 1914 and went to France 17th August 1915. He suffered shrapnel wounds to his hand 4th April 1916 and was awarded the Military Medal, London Gazette is 3rd June 1916, “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in action against the enemy carried a wounded comrade to safety whilst under enemy fire” He was Killed in Action 16th September 1916, aged 36, by German shelling of the front line trenches near Guillemont. France, during the Battle of the Somme.
