London Gazette 26th July 1917, For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in repelling a hostile bombing raid upon his Battalion at Messines Ridge on 1st June 1917. With great gallantry he and a Private bombed the enemy until the supply of bombs was exhausted. Whilst the Private was fetching a further supply this officer was severely wounded, but his promptness and courage frustrated the raid and caused the enemy to retire. He has lost his right hand: Messines Ridge 1st June 1917;   Severely wounded 1st June 1917 and died of these wounds 3rd June 1917:
