Born and lived at Radford, Nottingham. Son of Alfred and Emma Key, of 76, Norwood Road, Radford, Nottingham. He was a shop assistant prior to enlisting at Nottingham. He went to France 28th February 1915 and was killed in action, 13th October 1915, aged 21, during the attack on the German positions at the Hohenzollern Redoubt, France.
