Born and lived at Brampton, Chesterfield. Husband of Violet Brown (formerly Jones), of 38, Barker Lane, Brampton, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He was a collier prior to enlisting 22nd May 1900 at Chesterfield. He served in Hong Kong and Singapore. He re-enlisted 16th February 1912 and went to Gallipoli 28th August 1915. He went to France 18th June 1916 and was killed in action, 26th September 1916, aged 35, during the attack on the German positions near Ovillers, France, during the Battle of the Somme.
