Born at Bedwellty, Monmouthshire. Son of Llewellyn and Margaret Hughes, of 11, Castle Street, Tredegar, Monmouthshire. He was a colliery pay clerk prior to enlisting 9th October 1916 at Tredegar. He was posted to the 51st Training Battalion and then transferred to the Royal Welch Fusiliers, 1st December 1917. He went to France 6th December 1917 and was posted to the 19th Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers, 11th December 1917. He was transferred to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 6th April 1918 and was killed in action, 6th May 1918, aged 19, whilst serving in the line near Mesnil, France.
